Engineering students visit George Washington

USS George Washington is moored in Laem Chabang, and a small group of mechanical engineering students and staff from Asian University were privileged to visit the aircraft carrier on Monday 4 October 2010.

Asian University, located on Highway 331, near Jomtien, first opened its doors to students in 1998, and this year is celebrating its twelfth anniversary. On the evening of Saturday 18 September, Dr. Viphandh hosted an anniversary party at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club. This was attended by past and present students and staff, Asian University council members and friends of the university. H.E. Anand Panyarachun Hon. K.B.E., a past chairman of the university council, was one of the guests of honour.

Tuesday 21 September was 2010 Commencement Day or Graduation at Asian University. Lord Ronald Oxburgh again attended and conferred the Master and Bachelor degrees to the candidates. The graduates were congratulated by the University president, Dr Viphandh Roengpithya, and by Lord Oxburgh, who both wished them all happy and successful futures. Lord Oxburgh pointed out to the students and graduates and students that they were lucky to study at Asian University with its very low student to staff ratio; small classes meant plenty of attention, confidence building and the opportunity for students and faculty to get to know one another. The family atmosphere on the campus allowed students from all years and faculties to mix and learn from each other.

The auditorium was filled with proud parents, alumni and teaching staff, as well as current and graduating students. Lord Oxburgh has conferred the degrees every year since the first undergraduate degrees were awarded in 2002, and is now retiring from this position.

From June 16 to July 30, 2010, Asst. Prof. Dr. Danai Torrungrueng was on sabbatical leave to carry out research on computational electromagnetics (CEM) with Prof. Joel T. Johnson at the ElectroScience Laboratory (ESL), The Ohio State University (OSU), in Columbus Ohio, USA, (http://electroscience.osu.edu/).

Dr. Danai writes about his experiences:
“The collaboration between Asian University and the OSU has been strengthened in terms of research and Asian University student recruitment with scholarships offered for graduate studies at the OSU. My sabbatical-leave period was very enjoyable and productive.”

From 11 – 17 July 2010, Dr. Danai, his colleagues and his students presented three conference papers at the 2010 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and CNC/USNC/URSI Radio Science Meeting (http://www.apsursi2010.org/) held at the Sheraton Centre Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. One of the papers was presented by Ms. Varittha Sanphuang, a 4th year Electrical and Electronic Engineering undergraduate student. These papers will be expanded to become journal papers for submission in the future. In addition, Dr. Danai also met engineering alumni, Dr. Noppasin Niumsuwan, Mr. Theeraputh Mekathikom and Mr. Eric Lerspreuks, at the Buddhist Temple of America in California prior to returning back to Thailand.

Asian university welcomes US Veterans

The US Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs has approved the engineering programme at Asian University for undergraduate study. The University is looking forward to welcoming new American veteran undergraduates later this month, at the start of the academic year.

Supported by the American Veteran education programme, the veterans will be joining the engineering faculty under the Post 9/11 Veterans’ Educational Assistance Act of 2008. (Or the Post 9/11 GI Bill.)

Asian University is hosting students from countries as diverse as Venezuela, Russia, India and Portugal on two different programmes (tourism and business) for three weeks. With a full programme, the students are enjoying Thai hospitality, and an exciting Asian Experience.

The first week they stayed at the University campus, with lectures, social activities, visits to Pattaya, etc. On Thursday the tourism students went out to local attractions including the Food and Hoteliers Expo at PEACH, the Royal Cliff Hotel and the Floating Market where they were taken round by Manager Klaus Jergen. They loved the variety of products on sale, and laughed when they had their feet nibbled by fish. They also enjoyed the zip-line over the lake, feeding a 114 year old elephant and then the gentle boat ride through the market. The students are already planning another visit to the market.

The business group visited many contrasting local sites, including Ban Amphur market, the Portofino condominiums, the local school and temple in Huay Yai and also learnt about some of the local agriculture (cassava, pineapples and rubber) and industry including charcoal burning. One of the most interesting visits was to Worasan Farm, Hua Nong village, where they saw Chonburi Diamond, a beautiful prize winning bull.

The students have spent the weekend on Koh Samet and then move to the Sea Breeze Resort in Jomtien.

Success for Lamphasit

Lamphasit (Kwai Wing Lam), an Asian University BBA student (Finance and Banking) who will be graduating in September, reported that he passed the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Level I exam, which he took last month.

To attain the CFA, candidates must pass three exam levels and gain work experience in finance.

According to the CFA Institute, "the CFA Program is a graduate-level self-study program that combines a broad based curriculum of investment principles with professional conduct requirements." Further, "the CFA

charter is widely recognized by investors, investment practitioners, employers, regulators, and the media as the highest educational standard in the investment community."

Bloomberg reported that only 42% of 62,300 applicants passed the Level I Exam, a drop from the June 2009 exam. Successful candidates spend an average of 300 hours preparing for the exam.

Monday 5 July was the start of the 2010 Summer University, programme at Asian University. A second programme will start in August.

Dr. Viphandh welcomes our guests from other countries.

The undergraduates and postgraduates from six different countries will be together for three weeks an Asian Experience based in different parts of Thailand. Initially they are on the campus, then after a weekend on Koh Samet, they stay at the Sea Breeze Hotel in Jomtien. The next weekend is a visit to the north, to Chiang Mai, and then the final week is based in Bangkok. With a variety of lectures, visits and fun to look forward to, the participants are set to make the most of their visit to Thailand.

After dinner and a special welcome from the University President, Dr. Viphandh Roengpithya, and the programme organiser, Keith Cheeseborough, the Bi Si ceremony was held outside in the courtyard of the university. The stars shone down on the group, as they were told about the significance of the string and enjoyed the atmosphere with their new friends.

Second 2010 Summer Camp draws to a close

The second 2010 Asian University Summer Camp is almost over now, and some of the campers have written about their experiences.

We’re campers in English summer camp at Asian University. Our names are Toh, Aeiy and Aun. We came here because we want to practice our English language, meet new friends and live with new people which has made us adapt our behavior. In this summer camp, we learn and do many activities together from Monday to Friday. On Saturday night we have parties and dress up ourselves for theme parties and we have a lot of fun. On Sundays we go outside to visit many places.

Last weekend, we had fun and went to Khao Kheaw Open Zoo. We saw many kinds of animal. It was fantastic! Then we went to Lotus in South Pattaya in the afternoon. We went with our friends and bought things that we needed together. We had a great time at camp and we won’t forget everyone!

We heard the news about the Summer Camp at Asian University so we thought that it is a good idea to spend our summer to practice English, make new friends, learn to manage our lives. The things we like about the camp are the classrooms, friends, teachers and more. There are a lot of activities such as sports, cooking, dancing, arts. On Sundays we have an excursion, we went to Jomtien Beach, Khao Kheaw Open Zoo and the department store. On weekdays we have English, Math, and IT classes and sometimes we have a movie night to learn English. On Saturday night we have a party. We have to dress up ourselves by the theme, so we enjoyed about dress up and party so much.

Last week we went to Khao Kheaw Open Zoo. We learn more about the animal so we take the tour car to see all of the animals. We can touch the snake and two baby bearcats. Then we went to Tesco Lotus to buy useful things. Two weekends ago we went to Jomtien Beach, we cleaned the rubbish off the beach and some campers swam in the sea. After that, we went to Central Festival to buy things. We all had a good time together.

We get a lot of English skills in speaking, reading and writing. We’ve made new friends and new experiences. We will never forget this camp!

Business students visit Klong Toey

Aj. Varapa and Aj. Jumpon led a group of BBA students from the Import-Export Management and Finance of International Trade classes on a technical visit to the Bangkok Port (Klong Toey) on Monday March 8, 2010.

The visit started with an introduction to the Port Authority of Thailand and its operations, and then the students and faculty were taken to see the warehouses and loading yards.

Summer Campers want to save the world!

The first of Asian University’s two annual Summer Camps is under way with nearly eighty youngsters improving their English and having fun. Last weekend the students went to Jomtien Beach and two of the students have written the following about their trip.

“In the weekend, the students of Asian University and me went to Jomtien Beach. We went to Jomtien Beach to picked up litter on the Jomtien, because we wanted to save the world. Now, the world is in Global Warming. We wanted to save the nature in the world. In there after we picked up litter on the beach, teacher and students go to swim but me didn't because I did not carry the swimsuit but my friend went to swim in the sea and he was swim with teacher and TA. After we swam we ate lunch in the beach but we put the litter in the bin because we want to save the world.

After that, we went to the Central Festival Pattaya to relax some students went to Japanese restaurant to ate some Japanese food and some one went to bought some things to family or friend and by some things to next Saturday Korean theme in the party night. Some students went to bowling but I and my friends went to sport shop to bought football. After we bought I went to bought some thing for me like T-shirt and my friend bought CD and model car.

After we went back to school and we watched 2012 movie and I want to be scientist and my friend wants to be a pilot when we grow up and we want to save the human race and we can save the world now by we picked the litter to the bin or use plastic bag.”

“We came to Summer Camp at Asian University to study and practice English. We also make friends and meet TA (Teacher Assistant) and teachers. They are very nice and kind.

The first week was very fun. There were a lot of activities such as sports, movie nights and theme party. At night, TA took us to special activities such as dancing, sports and IT. In the class, the teachers let us play games and teach about world flags, superheroes and watch movies. The food is delicious. We enjoy it very much.

On Sunday morning, the TAs took us to Jomtien Beach to clean-up the beach and go swimming. We got many plastic bags, trash and dead fish. In the afternoon, we went to Central Festival Pattaya. The TAs let us buy accessories for the Korean Theme party night next week.

We think if anyone has a chance you should join this camp. You will get a lot of knowledge and it's really fun!”

As part of their course on art and design practice, the BA Multimedia Students at Asian University were given an assignment to produce character themed art work in the university grounds. The objectives include using the aesthetic qualities which derive from the natural environment. As Asian University is located (on Highway 331) on a large plot of land, with a variety of open space and trees, as well as flat and steeply sloping areas, there was plenty of choice.

Opportunities for Dutch students in the Pattaya area.

Jacques Lebens, from The Netherlands, is currently working in the Pattaya area on his thesis for his bachelor degree. He spent six months in the area last year and returned in February 2010 to complete his studies here. He is from the EPSA Educational Consultancy Foundation in the Netherlands and is here to identify opportunities for Dutch students to do internships in this region. His main interests are in the fields of business, tourism, education, hospitality management, health care and government services. He is focusing on industries and businesses within about twenty-five kilometres from Pattaya and Jomtien.

Last year Jacques, along with eight students from the Netherlands, spent his time studying the success of small Thai entrepreneurs in the area. This year he is preparing for his final thesis, and in April will be joined by another student who is focusing on the social and cultural aspects of the programme.

The EPSA foundation has been employed by the Fontys University of Applied Sciences, in the south of The Netherlands, to seek out opportunities for Dutch students to gain work experience with local companies in Thailand.

National Academic Research Achievement

On March 5, 2010, the Thailand Research Fund (TRF) announced the official results of the quality assessment of academic research outputs in science and technology for the discipline level of Thai higher education institutions in 2010. There were a total of 436 disciplines from 36 Thai higher education institutions participating in this assessment. Four indicators with appropriate weighting were employed; i.e., the equivalent international journal publication per faculty member (30%), the journal impact factor per faculty member (20%), the equivalent international journal publication per discipline (30%), and the journal impact factor per discipline (20%).

For the discipline of electrical engineering, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EE) in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Asian University obtained the maximum scores for the first two indicators with the TRF Index of 4.2 and the overall rating of 4 out of 5 scaling. For this national academic research achievement, the TRF will provide a maximum of 50,000 baht research funding to support research activities in the EE department at Asian University.

Asian University Games: 27th February 2010

Saturday, 27^th February saw the annual sporting event of the year here at Asian University, with all the individual year students competing against each other in a knockout competition in a host of games and activities.

The day started with an amazing dance competition which was clearly won by the first year students. This competition was followed by many exciting and physically charged sports ranging from Tug of War to Football, Chairball and Basketball.

While it was a toughly fought out competition in all areas, the first year students came through as the clear winners in the majority of events.

A great team spirit was shown by all participants and we look forward to many more such days in the future.

UN at Asian University

On 24 February Asian University was delighted to welcome Michelle Lee, who recently retired from the UN, and two of her ex colleagues. She gave a wide ranging talk about the UN and then answered the numerous questions from students and staff.

Michelle has worked for the UN for over thirty years, starting as an administrator and then participating in the areas of Peacekeeping and International Justice. She started her presentation with a quiz, to see how much (or little) everyone knew about the UN. Founded in 1945, there are now 192 member states, and fifteen members (including five permanent members) on the Security Council. There are six official languages of the UN, and all documents are prepared in these. However English and French are the working languages on a day to day basis.

Michelle told us about some of her experiences while working in Serbia, Cambodia, Thailand, Namibia and other parts of the world. She admitted that sometimes the UN is more successful than others. Clearly she found it interesting working in such a multi cultural, multi racial, multi lingual organisation, and said that sometimes, it was better to “agree to differ” with colleagues coming from a different background. Understanding one another was essential to work together effectively.

Dr. Viphandh Roengpithya, the University president, thanked Michelle and her colleagues for visiting Asian University, and looked forward to further contact in the future.

Keith visits Sakhalin University

In August 2008 Asian University signed an MOU with Sakhalin University. Sakhalin is an island to the north of Japan and is part of the Russian Federation. This MOU enabled the students of Sakhalin University, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, to attend our Summer University Programmes. We set up a special short programme about Tourism in Thailand especially for their students. Many thanks to Vladimir who made the first contact with them on Pattaya Beach.

Following their successful participation during our Summer 2008 programme, they returned again in 2009.

Asian University was invited to attend a conference in Sakhalin to be held in November 2010. Unfortunately Dr. Viphandh was unavailable due to pressure of work, so he invited Keith Cheeseborough to attend on his behalf.

During the conference, “Modern lines of Tourism and Hospitality Management”, Keith gave a lecture on “The History and Development of Tourism in Thailand”, as well as making a presentation about our Summer University programmes to the staff, visiting guests and the students of Sakhalin University.

The Rector of Sakhalin University and the Dean of The Tourism Faculty were extremely hospitable and we hope with their help to extend our network to include both Moscow and Seoul, Korea.

Keith commented: ”It was a great experience, we should do more to extend our networks internationally, but could we please find somewhere a bit warmer, it was -25^o C most of the time!”

Alumni come "home" to their University

Since the first student intake at Asian University in 1998, there have been many graduates and MBAs who are now taking their places in Thailand and the world.

The Alumni Homecoming on 23 January was a chance for them to return to campus, and share some of their experiences with the current students and with faculty who taught them over the years.

Dr, Viphandh Roengpithya, the university president, welcomed the visitors, and the students with an interesting talk covering many aspects of his working life, including how he started his first company, and how he made his first million. He especially encouraged the students from families who run their own businesses to gain experience in another company, before they return home to the family firm.

The students and alumni then held a “getting to know you” session, to learn about the successes of the alumni, and the stories of their experiences. There was plenty of catching up to do.

After lunch, Nichasil Tantivejkul, who graduated BBA in 2004 and is now working for the government in NESDB (National Economics and Social Development Board) gave a lively presentation about his work experience and then gave predictions for the next twenty years in Thailand. After graduating from Asian University he studied for a Master’s degree in Australia, and gained worked experience with Nectec, General Motors and Siam Cement Group before his current job.

For the future, he predicted better integration of the regional infrastructure (roads, water, power, telecoms) and referred to the twenty first century building blocks: atoms, bits, genes and neurons.

Everyone enjoyed sports organised by the University sports staff, and Alumni beat the students at Chairball and football, while the students won the basketball game.

The day was rounded off with an excellent barbecue, and the sharing of experiences continued.

M.4 and M.5 College students enjoy their field trip

We all remember school trips from our childhood, wherever we may have been brought up. And in Thai schools today, this tradition continues, especially as recent educational acts have stressed the need for Thai children to experience their culture close up and first hand.

With this in mind, the staff from the College at Asian University organized an instructive and enjoyable social trip for its M.4 and M.5 students, taking in the central plains provinces of Ayutthaya, Suphaburi and Chainat.

Students studying Thai literature, history, geography and Buddhism got to experience their subjects in the real world, outside the formal study atmosphere of their classrooms.

Among the sights the students were treated to were the great ruined temples of Ayutthaya, traditional farming techniques in Suphanburi, and one of the Kingdom’s largest hydroelectric dams in Chainat. The students saw for themselves the hard work involved in farming, and tried their hands at planting rice and ploughing with buffaloes.

A weary, but thoroughly satisfied group of students and staff returned home late on Sunday night at the end of their 3 three day tour. All believed that their cultural adventure had been very rewarding, that it had enhanced their understanding of their school subjects, and had motivated them to find out more about their fascinating country.

Success for Asian University Dance Team.

Congratulations to the Asian University Dance Team, who recently came third in a national competition. The students have written about their success.

"Thailand Game Show is one of the biggest game show in Thailand. The event ran from 12-14 January 2010 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. It had a dance competition called “Grand Chase Cover Dance Contest” which was organized by Funbox company. It had many teams entered to this competition and Asian University team was one of them too.

The Asian U team has 5 members who are Tipdonnaya Bhumikornsakulsiri, Tipvarintorn Bhumikornsakulsiri, Pawida isarangkul na ayudhaya, Patchaphon Suphason and Senee Chaikulthewin.

Asian University team which covers f(x) passed through the final round and our team got third place in this competition.

Moreover two members of the Asian University, who are Tipdonnaya and Tipvarintorn, got first place in another competition called “Idol Girl 2010” in which they will be a presenter for “Monster Master online” game.

The Faculty of Liberal Arts is offering an exciting new Bachelor of Arts (B. A.) degree in Communication Arts, beginning in August 2010. This multi-disciplinary program is created for those who wish to follow careers in Communication fields such as advertising, public relations, marketing, human resources and media communication, in a variety of industries such as radio, television, newspapers and magazines or any business environment which has a Communication Department. There are two choices, the visually gifted are probably best suited to Media Communications, and the verbally gifted are better suited to the Corporate Communications courses. All the courses are taught by faculty from Business, Multimedia and Liberal Arts. Students choose their own focus on written, oral or visual communication in several combinations which match their own strengths and goals.

In 2009, Jumpon Kluaymai-ngarm was awarded the Erasmus Mundus scholarship by the European Commission and now has an MA Economics in International Trade and European Integration (with Distinction). The course was organized by a consortium of seven European universities:

Then we all moved to Antwerp for the second term from January to early April. Finally, we concluded in Prague starting from after the Easter break to end of June.”

Jumpon received a BBA (First-class Honors), majoring in Business Economics from Asian University in 2005. He also holds a Post-graduate Certificate in Economics for Business Analysis from Staffordshire University, UK. Currently, he is an Instructor in the Faculty of Business.

As a continuation of the programme of Visiting Artists, on 4 December, the students and staff at Asian university were delighted to welcome two special, and very different, artists.

In the afternoon, Khun Korkaew Korwatana described her work as a lomographer. She explained that she has been exploring the world of lomography and plastic toy cameras for four years. The cameras often produce unexpected results, maybe the light leaked in, or the film was old and produced strange colours, or some other happy accident. Strictly analogue, this branch of creative and experimental photography is increasing in popularity. spoke to the students and staff with enthusiasm for her subject and showed many examples of her work. The multi-media students were particularly interested and took the opportunity to ask questions of Khun Korkaew.

Visiting Artist series: 4 December Dr Sumet Jumsai

As a continuation of the programme of Visiting Artists, on 4 December, the students and staff at Asian university were delighted to welcome two special, and very different, artists.

In the morning Dr. Sumet Jumsai, one of Thailand’s most famous architects, talked about his work, his philosophies, and many other subjects. He is best known here for the Nation Building and the Robot Building, both in Bangkok. But he has also been responsible for many other post-modern designs for buildings in Thailand and elsewhere.

Dr. Sumet offered the analogy of an architect as a conductor of an orchestra. The conductor needs to know what each member can do, and then he needs to bring everyone together, at the right time, and doing the right thing. It’s like project management.

Having ranged through Plato, Abraham, the five Buddhist precepts, the Ten Commandments and many other topics, he explained that he believes that teachers should make their students love their subjects, which will encourage students to want to learn more throughout their lives.

He also spoke about ways to deal with rising sea levels (and sinking land) in Bangkok. People have the choice to fight nature, like the Dutch have done very successfully, by building a barrier across the Gulf of Thailand. However there are major maintenance issues associated with this idea. The other choice is to go with nature, and establish floating villages and house and villages. Dr. Sumet showed pictures of old Bangkok, when many people lived in boats on the waterways; maybe they knew something?

He is also painter, social worker, conservationist and author. His best known book, NAGA, Oxford Univ. Press 1988, deals with the origin of civilization in the Asia-Pacific region.

National Science Museum visits

Asian University President, Dr Viphandh Roengpithya welcomed all guests to the university, and invited the Deputy Mayor of Pattaya, Khun Wuttisak Rermkijakarn, to open the three day event.
Khun Manop Isaree, Director of the National Science Museum of Thailand, also spoke to the assembled guests, and the youngsters from many local schools went into the sports centre to enjoy the science fun, with their teachers and staff from the NSM. About 2,500 youngsters are visiting each day, and Asian University is pleased to welcome them all to the campus.

At Auditorium 1 at the College at Asian University on the 27 October 2009, Colonel Doctor Sumol Nakchalerm gave a lecture to an audience of College students from grades 10 to 12

Mr. Sirivetch Rodsavas, Grade 10 Science, wrote the following, after attending the lecture.

“I learned about the value of life from the lecture. In my opinion everyone should understand it. If we all understand the value of life, Thailand will be a better place. Some people worship money. They can die for money. They break laws just to reach their monetary goals.

Drugs dealing is understood to yield easy money. Children fall victims of drugs because they don’t understand the true harms of it. Children are eager to try new things and follow their friends. Taking drugs leads on to other societal problems. It’s the basis of child terrorism. Drugs are given to children to wipe out their fears in which they can commit terrorism; sometimes suicide terror. Drugs are also the base of human trafficking, victims of drugs need money to buy more. Children are not capable of employment with sufficient pay to buy drugs. If we all understand the value of life, it will be the key factor that will solve these problems and bring happiness to us all.”

Some volunteer students from the College from grades 10, 11 and 12, Ajarn Sasibussaba Papol and some of the College teachers went to Jing Jai children’s center, Pattaya Klang, Chonburi on Saturday, 12th September 2009.

The children, who are in the center, are poor and have no houses or parents to take care of them. Therefore, our College students gave them lunch, some sweet meal, and some small gifts to the children. Additionally, the volunteers showed dances and songs to entertain the children to make them happy. All the volunteers enjoyed their time, as they made an effort to do good, and they were really happy to spend time at Jing Jai.

Of course it also made them appreciate how lucky they all are.

Engineering students visit Industrial wastewater treatment plant

On Thursday, 22 October, a group of engineering students and lecturers from Asian University joined a visit organised by the British and German Chambers of Commerce. Everyone met at the offices of Hemaraj Land and Development Plc in the Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate (Rayong) where there was a presentation about Hemaraj, its Industrial Estates, customers, and Green Management.

Hemaraj was founded in 1998 and has 13,000 acres in six industrial estates in the Eastern Seaboard. With the current emphasis on environmental issues, Hemaraj publish all their environmental monitoring results on their website. Then there was a short talk about the Constructed Wetlands on the estate, which had initially been used for tertiary treatment of effluent, but is now used for secondary treatment as well. There are two Constructed Wetlands, vertical flow ponds, in series.

The group then visited the constructed wetlands to have a look for themselves.

Everyone drove to The Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate (Chonburi) to the offices of Waste Management Siam (WMS). General Manager John Hamilton showed us a video about WMS and then gave a short talk before we visited the landfill and the waste water treatment plant.

Robot Camp

Earlier this month, around forty boys from Assumption College, Bangrak, came to Asian University for a Robot Camp.

Most of the boys are members of the Robot Club at their college and some have represented Assumption at international competitions in Thailand and overseas.

The boys, aged from 11 to 17, divided into teams to make and programme their robots to play “football”. Goalkeepers or defenders were made by the organisers, and were all programmed in the same way.

The five day camp included plenty of fun activities as well as the serious business of making the robots. Tuition was by Asian University engineering students and some of their friends who had all been members of the Robot Club at Assumption College.

The robots are made using a set of components from Lego, which allows plenty of opportunity for inventive designs, and the programme used is Robolab, again allowing students to design the robots to react in different ways.

At the trial competition, the team of Asian University student organisers (including Muay, and other non engineering students) won. But when they played for the final knock-out championship, the winners were Blooming (from the College at Asian University) and his brother Beamy.

Congratulations to all concerned: the Asian University students for organizing, and the youngsters for taking part.

Asian University Engineering students visit District Cooling and Power Plant at Suvarnabhumi

On Wednesday October 7^th several final year Mechanical Engineering students from Asian University visited the District Cooling System and Power Plant Co., Ltd. (DCAP). This is located 2km from Suvarnabhumi international airport and it provides 48MW of power to Suvarnabhumi, meeting all of its electrical needs. This is a unique power plant in Thailand because it not only generates electricity from both a gas and a steam turbine but it uses the waste heat to provide chilled water for the air conditioning systems at Suvarnabhumi. It was the first of its kind in

and as a result attracts over 1,000 visitors per year mostly from Industrial and Academic environments.

Upon their arrival the students were greeted by Mr. Darunporn Kamolpus the vice president of DCAP who gave a technical presentation and a guided tour of the impressive facilities. They were accompanied by two lecturers from the Engineering faculty at Asian University, Dr. Rajesh Kempegowda and Dr. James Moran. It was an interesting field trip and gave the students to opportunity to experience practical applications of engineering to compliment their classroom studies.

Commencement Day 2009

Wednesday 23 September 2009 was a very special day for the graduating students at Asian university; Lord Ronald Oxburgh was on hand, as he has been for the past nine years, to confer degree certificates.

The University President, Dr. Viphandh Roengpithya welcomed Lord Oxburgh and the assembled graduands, parents, students, friends and faculty members to the tenth Commencement or Graduation Day. He spoke about the founding of the university and how the alumni from previous years are moving upwards in their careers in Thailand and elsewhere. He wished this year’s graduates success with their lives, and hoped that they would remember their time at Asian University as something special.

Lord Oxburgh then gave each graduand their certificate, along with a few words of congratulation and good wishes. As the university has progressed, new programmes have been added, and this year saw the first graduates from the Master of Science (Management), Master of Education (TESOL) and Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia programmes.

After the formality of the certificate presentation, Lord Oxburgh addressed the audience, especially the new graduates, and spoke of some of the challenges that they will have to face as they start their careers; changing climates, diminishing worldwide resources, and other major issues. He concluded by asking the graduates to thank their families, friends and employers for the support they have received during their time at Asian University. Many of the graduands were not able to be at the ceremony as they are now pursuing their studies overseas, or working in other countries.

Dr. Viphandh also bid a formal farewell and thanked Robert Shrubsall for all his hard work; Robert is retiring after eight years at the University and as the first Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts.

Victory in friendly game with Royal Australian Navy

On Thursday 17^th September, Asian University welcomed the football team and support crew from the ship, ‘The HMAS DARWIN’ of The Royal Australian Navy, to the university campus, for a friendly game of football.

It was an action packed game enjoyed by both players and spectators, which was closely lead by Asian U throughout the match with the final result being 3 - 2 to Asian University. Asian U's goals were scored by students Valentino, Pod and Jew.

Many thanks go to the President of ‘The Navy League’, Pattaya, Mr. Peter Thorand who very kindly organized this game and previous events with visiting naval ships.

On Monday 14th September, we were very pleased to welcome three of our first batch BABE (Bachelor of Arts in English for Business Communication) alumni, Ms. Nattamon Sartsatit (Pui), Ms. Tisana Harintharanont (Ngo) and Ms. Roslyn Pitakwong (Gigi), back to Asian U.

Pui very kindly gave a presentation about her career to date. The audience included many of the current BA students as well as students from the College, who have yet to finalise their choices on what subjects to study and at which universities.

Full of enthusiasm, Pui explained how she first won her job at Mindshare, against considerable competition, even for a starter position. During the selection process she gave a presentation, in English, which clearly impressed the interviewers. Mindshare is a media agency, and Pui works in Bangkok for several of their clients including Nike, Warner music Thailand, Bacardi and Ford.

During her four years at Asian university Pui didn’t really understand why she needed to study some of the topics offered, but she has now found that these courses have helped her with her career progression. Pui now understands the uses for these skills, and has found plenty of applications. She mentioned especially the small classes, with plenty of chance to make presentations to peers, and also learning presentation and negotiation skills, summarizing, business English, and others.

Pui explained how, throughout every day we are all exposed to various forms of media: radio, tv, newspapers, billboards, internet, etc. Much of this is subtle marketing and brand awareness.

She asked the audience if they could name brands from the first letter of their name, as written in the advertisements and on the products. Everyone was able to recognize the first C of Coca Cola, the first E from E-Bay, P from Puma, and all the others.

Pui finished by thanking everyone at Asian University for all their help while she was here, and wishing the present students well for their futures.

All three alumni seemed happy to meet up with teachers and other students, and talk about their careers and their time at Asian University with pride.

A group of engineering students have just participated in a seminar at the Royal Cliff. One of the fourth year mechanical engineering students who attended, China Tosinthiti (Ninja), reports:

“Some of the Mechanical engineering students from Asian University with their lecturers have participated in the “Gas Engine Based CHP in Thailand” seminar organized by the Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE) in cooperation with Wartsila Company (manufacturer of diesel and gas engines from Finland), The seminar was held at Royal Cliff Beach Resort, Pattaya on 3^rd September 2009.

The seminar was about cogeneration, combination of electrical and heat energy production mainly by gas engines. The efficiency from conventional power production is about 35% and the rest is released as waste heat, but cogeneration uses the waste heat for cooling and chilling applications and increases efficiency up to 90%. Topics included typical electricity/heat/steam/chill demand for industries and commercials, engines, absorption and compression chilling, boundary conditions for cogeneration in Thailand, fuel properties, engine responses, types and sizes of engines, examples of cogeneration plants in Thailand and abroad, and the future for cogeneration in Thailand.

Speakers for this seminar are very famous professors in energy technology and experts from Wartsila Company. People who attended the seminar were mostly engineers, chief engineers in private companies, admirals of the Royal Thai Navy, lecturers and marketing managers.

Asian University students participated by asking and answering questions. The seminar expands the knowledge of engineering and vision of students for Thailand’s future energy.”

An Asian Experience: Summer University 2009

Thirty nine students from thirteen different countries have just enjoyed being a part of Asian University’s fourth Summer University programme. Students came from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Russia, Slovenia, Spain and elsewhere, making it a truly international experience.

They spent a week at the university campus, meeting the students, and learning from them about the Thai way of life. A Thai evening of presentations by the Thai students was followed by an International evening, with the visitors telling everyone about their home countries. Several of the visitors had brought along food and drink from their countries for everyone to share. People either loved or hated the salty licorice from Denmark! However, most people enjoyed tasting the wines. Then a weekend on Koh Samet to relax, including dinner and a fire show on the beach, before enjoying a week at the Jomtien Sea Breeze Hotel. The final week was spent based at the Ambassador Hotel in Bangkok.

The courses offered the young people a chance to listen to many experts and practitioners to improve their knowledge about business and tourism in Asia, especially in Thailand.

Visits to local businesses gave them an insight into the wide variety of products and services here. They enjoyed seeing behind the scenes at the Royal Cliff and Amari hotels, where they heard about hotel management in Pattaya. They were very impressed by the Bangkok Hospital, Pattaya, where Dr. Iain and Neil gave a presentation and showed us some of their facilities. Other places visited included Mama Noodles production plant (Thai President Foods), Nong Nooch gardens, an authentic Thai meal on the beach at Tung Seafood, Tiffany’s, Henry J Bean, etc. In Bangkok they went to the Grand Palace and the Stock Exchange of Thailand; they learnt the benefits of travelling by Skytrain (BTS) and found plenty of evening entertainment venues to explore. Of course shopping was on the agenda, in both Pattaya and Bangkok, with visits to malls and street-markets.

Everyone enjoyed hands-on classes in Thai Massage, fruit carving and cooking Thai food as well as an introduction to the Thai language and Muay Thai boxing. The students heard about the Art of Meditation from Pra Suchart at Wat Yan, and gave alms to a group of monks early one morning at the university.

The Special Guest speaker this year was Mr. Chung Po-yang (Po Chung) OBE, SBS, JP, a co-founder of DHL International, and a very successful entrepreneur. This lecture was open to the public and Po Chung came with his wife, and told everyone about his life, so far, before telling us about his many business and philanthropic ventures. His talk was an inspiration to the young students who are just starting their working lives.

Some of the comments on the course included “Awesome!”, “Very well organized”, “I liked the chance to talk with the lecturers” and “The mix of international students.”

Staff at Asian University are now starting to plan for Summer University 2010.

Successes for fourth year Engineering student Pro

Ms. Varittha Sanphuang, a fourth-year electrical and electronic engineering (EE) student, won an IEEE MTT-S (Microwave Theory and Techniques Society) Undergraduate/Pre-Graduate Scholarship of US $1,500 to carry out her research during 2009-2010 at Asian University. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. Only six students around the world have received this IEEE scholarship this year. She will work on the following research topics, “Analysis and Design of Electromagnetic Bandgap (EBG) Metamaterials and Negative-Refractive-Index Transmission-Line (NRI-TL) Metamaterials Using Equivalent Transmission-Line Models with New Graphical Tools.”

In addition, she also won an IEEE AP-S (Antennas and Propagation Society) Pre-Doctoral Research Award of US $1,000 during 2009-2010. For this research award, she will work on a similar research topic as above. Her research projects will be carried out under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Danai Torrungrueng, a senior IEEE member, at Asian University. These scholarships will be used to support her in attending international EE conferences. She expects to publish journal and conference papers based on her research work.
