Drama from Asian University’s English students.

Khun Apple dances beautifully

Khun Ton wins the Mr Universe competition, presented by Miss Rung

Asian University’s English Immersion Programme (EIP) has been running for seven years, and the latest five week module finished last week.

Orders in the army from Captain Sayam

On the last Friday of term, the staff and students were treated to seven very entertaining short plays by the EIP students.

Khun Apple will be teaching biology in the College at Asian university next term.

Apart from the regular EIP students some of whom have been studying at the university for 5 weeks, ten weeks or longer, the group included twenty nurse trainers from the South of Thailand, who consistently showed their enthusiasm for learning English.

The plays (all specially written for ESL learners) included the first day for a new dentist, new recruits in the Army, a Mr. Universe contest (won by the window cleaner), an Italian restaurant in Rome, where a couple are celebrating their anniversary, and a bank robbery that doesn’t go to plan. Each play involved four or five students, and lasted for about ten minutes. It gave the students a chance to show off their new English skills, and to prove that they can communicate effectively, as well as giving them a confidence boost. The props had been assembled by students and teachers.

The finale was a beautiful Thai dance by Khun Apple and a short “karaoke” song and dance session.

Two of the students who have been immersed in English for thirty weeks of lessons, are now set to start teaching biology in the College at Asian University. Dr May (in the striped top) has a PhD in genetics and the other teacher-to-be is Khun Apple (the dancer).

Bank robber Nut didn't get the money.

The EIP programme runs for eight five-week sessions each year, with classes on five days each week. Bespoke programmes are available for groups, with either specialised topics and vocabulary, or on a part time basis.

Summer Campers help to clean Jomtien beach

Jomtien Beach

In March, Asian University opened the first of their two English Summer camps for 2008 with one hundred and forty students. The youngsters were eagerly awaiting the English programme and the many additional educational, social, sporting and fun activities.

Taking a break in the shade

Many of the summer campers have expressed an interest in continuing their study, following the camps, either in The College M4, 5 and 6 or in one of the
undergraduate degree programmes offered by Asian University.

Last Sunday the campers went to Jomtien beach to participate in an environmental day. They helped clean up the beach and surrounding areas to
promote social awareness and responsibility within our community. It was a
great day out with support from the local government who provided safety officers to man the beach and surrounds to ensure a happy and safe environment for all concerned.

One of the leading students Mr. Potchara (Booming) who has returned to Asian University Summer Camp for the second year running and is joining ‘The College’ M4 in May had this to say about the day out:

When we arrived at Jomtien Beach we started to clean up the beach by collecting the trash and waste for the community (ourselves) and then, we swam in the sea for one and a half hours. That moment was the greatest sea trip in Thailand for me.

Yellow sand and nice wind together with delicious sea food made it great. Our safety was taken care of by the teacher assistants and the local government body. After we finished swimming we went to take a shower and went shopping then returned to Asian University. Thanks for Teacher and Assistant who created this wonderful sea travel for us’!!

The photographs show the youngsters, in their distinctive pink shirts, enjoying a day out in Jomtien.
