Further Success for Asian University Graduate.

Congratulations Jumpon!

Jumpon in the mini marathon at the University

Jumpon shares a joke with University Vice President Panit, at the end of 2008 Summer University.

In 2009, Jumpon Kluaymai-ngarm was awarded the Erasmus Mundus scholarship by the European Commission and now has an MA Economics in International Trade and European Integration (with Distinction). The course was organized by a consortium of seven European universities:

Universiteit Antwerpen, Belgium (University of Antwerp)

Università degli Studi di Bari (UB), Italy (University of Bari)

Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium (Free University of Brussels)

Universidad de Cantabria, Spain (University of Cantabria)

Université des Sciences et Technologies de Lille, France (University of Science and Technology of Lille)

Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, Czech Republic (Prague University of Economics)

Staffordshire University, United Kingdom

Jumpon told me, “All the partners contribute one way or another to the programme. However, I was only in three campuses. The first trimester from September to early December was the choice between Lille and Stoke-on-Trent - of course, a French-phobia like me requested to go to England. Then we all moved to Antwerp for the second term from January to early April. Finally, we concluded in Prague starting from after the Easter break to end of June.”

Jumpon received a BBA (First-class Honors), majoring in Business Economics from Asian University in 2005. He also holds a Post-graduate Certificate in Economics for Business Analysis from Staffordshire University, UK. Currently, he is an Instructor in the Faculty of Business.

Khun Korkaew

Khun Korkaew with students Pat, Som and Boss

As a continuation of the programme of Visiting Artists, on 4 December, the students and staff at Asian university were delighted to welcome two special, and very different, artists.

Samples of Khun Korkaew's lomography

In the afternoon, Khun Korkaew Korwatana described her work as a lomographer. She explained that she has been exploring the world of lomography and plastic toy cameras for four years. The cameras often produce unexpected results, maybe the light leaked in, or the film was old and produced strange colours, or some other happy accident. Strictly analogue, this branch of creative and experimental photography is increasing in popularity. spoke to the students and staff with enthusiasm for her subject and showed many examples of her work. The multi-media students were particularly interested and took the opportunity to ask questions of Khun Korkaew.

Visiting Artist series: 4 December Dr Sumet Jumsai

As a continuation of the programme of Visiting Artists, on 4 December, the students and staff at Asian university were delighted to welcome two special, and very different, artists.

In the morning Dr. Sumet Jumsai, one of Thailand’s most famous architects, talked about his work, his philosophies, and many other subjects. He is best known here for the Nation Building and the Robot Building, both in Bangkok. But he has also been responsible for many other post-modern designs for buildings in Thailand and elsewhere.

Dr. Sumet offered the analogy of an architect as a conductor of an orchestra. The conductor needs to know what each member can do, and then he needs to bring everyone together, at the right time, and doing the right thing. It’s like project management.

Dean Michael thanks Dr. Sumet

Having ranged through Plato, Abraham, the five Buddhist precepts, the Ten Commandments and many other topics, he explained that he believes that teachers should make their students love their subjects, which will encourage students to want to learn more throughout their lives.

He also spoke about ways to deal with rising sea levels (and sinking land) in Bangkok. People have the choice to fight nature, like the Dutch have done very successfully, by building a barrier across the Gulf of Thailand. However there are major maintenance issues associated with this idea. The other choice is to go with nature, and establish floating villages and house and villages. Dr. Sumet showed pictures of old Bangkok, when many people lived in boats on the waterways; maybe they knew something?

Khun Panit (University vice president) with Dr Sumet

He is also painter, social worker, conservationist and author. His best known book, NAGA, Oxford Univ. Press 1988, deals with the origin of civilization in the Asia-Pacific region.
